ABSTRACT
Objective: The goal of this study, concerning the Greek public hospital for the first time, was to explore the work commitment of the nursing staff and the level of the perceiving internal quality of the provided services. Furthermore, the survey attempted to imprint the correlation between the factors of the perceiving internal quality and the occupational commitment.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study has been designed in order to explore the correlation of the above mentioned perceiving internal quality with the work commitment by choosing as subjects of the survey, nurses from two regional hospitals of northern Greece. What is more, 236 questionnaires have been distributed with a high percentage of responsiveness which reaches to 88,98% (n=210). The statistic processing has been accomplished with the use of a particular statistical program which is called Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 19.0 and included frequencies, percentages, perimeter control, fluctuation analysis and calculation of the coefficient of linear correlation.
Results: With reference to the gender of the statistic population that answered to the questionnaire, it has been observed an uneven allocation where the percentage of the women population reaches to 79.52% whereas the respective percentage of men reaches to 20,48%. Regarding the age, the overwhelming majority of the respondents belonged to the group of 40-50 years of age. The Greek nurses showed mediocre to high levels of work commitment and evaluated the range of the quality (concerning the tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy). Finally, all the examined factors have been highly associated with each other.
Conclusions: The measurement of the nurses‘ occupational commitment in their work constitutes invaluable source of information regarding the quality of the services provided in the Greek hospitals. Moreover this information allows us form the necessary guidelines for the qualitative upgrading of the hospital care.
Key words: work commitment, internal quality, nurses, hospital
